The therapeutic mud of the Euganean Thermal Springs is the result of a refined and unrepeatable natural process — an alchemy that nature performs slowly, with millennial patience.
At its origin lie two fundamental components: the purest clay extracted from Lago Costa, in the heart of the municipality of Arquà Petrarca, and the hyperthermal thermal water of the Euganean springs. Yet the true secret of the mud lies not only in the warmth it returns to the body during treatment. Scientific research has revealed something even more extraordinary: a documented, natural and side-effect-free anti-inflammatory efficacy — something no medication, however effective, can offer to the same degree.
The maturation: where nature becomes healing
Immersed in thermal water at a controlled temperature of 35–38 °C, the mud rests in dedicated maturation pools for approximately sixty days. During this time — silent and necessary — a blue-green biofilm forms spontaneously on the clay surface in contact with the water: a living aggregate of cyanobacteria and diatoms, microorganisms of extraordinary biological complexity.
It is precisely this organic component — invisible to the eye, yet decisive — that endows Euganean mud with its exceptional therapeutic properties. No artificial addition, no accelerated process: simply nature taking its course, in its own time and in its own way.
A perfect and unrepeatable balance
For this process to unfold, everything must be in harmony: the mineral richness of the thermal water, its natural concentration of dissolved salts and gases, the environmental conditions of the maturation pools. THERMAL WATER

A millennial gift of nature

Water is the soul of the Euganean Thermal Springs — and its story begins far away, among the unspoiled peaks of the Monti Lessini.
Of meteoric origin, these waters take shape in the Venetian Pre-Alps at approximately 1,500 metres above sea level, where they filter into the subsoil and embark on an extraordinary journey. Over tens of thousands of years they descend into the depths — reaching 2,000–3,000 metres — slowly enriching themselves with precious mineral salts along the way. After travelling approximately 80 kilometres through the heart of the earth, they re-emerge at the surface with exceptional force and purity, at temperatures exceeding 85 °C.
An immense span of time, returned to the surface as vital energy.
The composition of this water is unique: classified according to consolidated medical nomenclature as hyperthermal salt-bromine-iodine water, it is rich in electrolytes such as sodium and chlorine, with a high nitrogen concentration that can reach 90% of total gases. These physico-chemical characteristics are not merely extraordinary — they are essential.
It is precisely thanks to this water that one of thermal medicine’s most precious treasures is born: the Euganean mud. Over approximately two months of maturation, the constant flow of hyperthermal water transforms a selected clay matrix into a mud with pronounced anti-inflammatory properties, capable of engaging with the body in a profound and natural way.

FANGOBALNEOTHERAPY: THE THERMAL RITUAL PAR EXCELLENCE
Fangobalneotherapy is one of the oldest and most scientifically documented treatments in thermal medicine. Its benefits extend well beyond the stay: the effects of a complete cycle persist for many months, without any of the gastrointestinal side effects associated with common anti-inflammatory medications.
The ritual in three phases
The treatment unfolds in a precise and harmonious sequence, designed to accompany the body through an experience of progressive release and regeneration.
The mud application. The mature thermal mud is applied directly to the skin at a temperature between 38 and 42 °C, and left to act for 15–20 minutes. The heat penetrates deeply, carrying with it the active principles of organic origin that only Euganean mud can offer.
The thermal bath. Following a cleansing shower, one immerses in thermal water at 36–38 °C for 8–15 minutes, in an atmosphere of enveloping warmth that prolongs and amplifies the effects of the treatment.
The sudoral reaction. Wrapped in warm linen, one is invited to rest in quietude: it is during this phase that the biological effects of the treatment are completed through the body’s natural thermoregulatory response. The ritual may conclude with a draining massage to reactivate cutaneous circulation.
